Before the creation of this world, "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? ... when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" Read Job 38: 4-7.
There is no Biblical reference to the use of singing by Adam and Eve, but if the children of God formerly created and the angels sang, surely GOD shared with them the gift of music. The use made of the angels and children of God was to express joy for the creation of this land. They used it to praise God for His creative process. No doubt Adam and Eve sang in Eden, the goodness, the mercy, and the love of God for them. They sang about their personal experience with the Creator.
Musical Instruments in the Bible
Musical instruments were created by Dor a descendant of Cain. The Bible's first reference to music is in Gen. 4:21 "His brother's name was Jubal; This is the father of all who play the harp and the flute. "Speaking of his misery, Job declares," Therefore my harp has become mourning, and my flute to the cry of those who mourn. "Jó 30:31. This text indicates that in Job's house such instruments were used for amusement and joy. "Why did you flee in secret, and deceive me, and not tell me, that I might send you with joy and with song, to the sound of drums and harps." Gen. 31: 27 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit of God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and touched it with his hand; Then Saul was relieved, and he was better, and the evil spirit withdrew from him. "I Sam. 16: 17, 18, and 23. David relieved Saul's violent temperament through the soft sounds of his harp.
The Music of the Temple
David decided to build a house for GOD. According to their plans, it should be: "Magnificent in excellence, to name and glory in all lands" (1 Chron 22: 1-5). Because of his involvement in wars, God denies him the privilege of building the temple, but he allows David to make arrangements for his son, Solomon, to carry out the work. This preparation was complete and perfect in every detail, including the plans for music ... Never seen before until that time, music had had more than a small part in the religious service of God "(1 Chronicles 25: 1). Asaph would be the chief musician accompanied by Jeduthun and Heman. There would be a total of 288 professional musicians (Masters). All trained for the exercise of musical ministry. (1 Chronicles 25: 7) I Chron. 25 from verse 9 to 31, reports that David divided these musicians into 24 groups of 12 where each group would be in the service of the temple for a week at a time, from Friday evening until after Saturday's religious service the following week , For 8 days, and on Saturday the two groups would be together (during the week 12 musicians and on Saturday were 24 musicians). This would give 2 participations per year for each group of musicians.
Music used in the dedication of the Temple
David died knowing that everything for the new temple, including its inspiring music, was planned and prepared. David spoke of an orchestra with 4,000 musicians praising the Lord with the instruments. (I Chronicles 23: 5). Although David completed all plans, including his musical service before his death, it was eleven years before the building was finished. It took Solomon seven years to raise him to Mount Moriah. Psalm 136 became part of the musical program of the day. "It was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise of the Lord. "II Chron. 5: 13.
The Book of Salmos
The service of the second temple was modeled according to that of the first. Nehemiah refers to the restoration of the musical cult "according to the commandment of David." (Nehemiah 12:45) "For in the days of David and Asaph from ancient times there were chiefs of the singers, and songs of praise and deed Thanks be to God. "(Nee 12:46)
The book of Psalms was called "praises" (Salmos), because it was the hymnal of the chanting services of the second temple, in which praise was the most important part. For hundreds of years, temple musicians have used certain Salmos for each day of the weekly and regular cycle of worship services. They also used some others for the services of the annual festivals. The remaining hymns were sung at many other regular temple services. The sacred hymn book was probably familiar to the people at large, for when the musicians returned to their homes after their week of temple service, they certainly taught the psalms to their families and neighbors.
Division of the Psalms - the 150 psalms are divided into five books. The reason for this form of division is unknown because the order is not chronological nor does it follow the date of its composition. For example, Salmos 142 is considered to have been written by David when he was in the cave, and Ps. 1 is considered to have been the last of the Salmos to be written. It is a prelude to the whole hinário.
Authors of the Salmos
Were written The titles of the various psalms tell us that: 73 of them by David; 2 by Solomon; 12 For the sons of Korah; 12 by Asafe; 1 by Heman; 1 by Ethan and 1 by Moses. Most of them were written in the time of David and Solomon (100 BC century). In the Holy Bible, the content of the Psalms are prayers, praises, hallelujahs and chants of steps that were hymns sung by devout pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem for the annual festivals. All the emotions of the human soul are addressed in the entire collection of the Psalms. These include triumph and despair, trust and uncertainty, prayers and praises. It is recommended to read the entire Book of Psalms. The musical use of the Psalms: titles and instructions to the musicians show that the psalms were sung during the temple's religious services. Instrumental music was used at the time of the second temple as an accompaniment to the voices, although there were instrumental interludes considered to be illustrative of the text of the Psalm.
The Song of Zechariah
80 days after the birth of John the Baptist, Zechariah his father, who had been mute because he did not believe in the angel (Luke 1:20), speaks again after confirming that the boy's name is really John, although there is no precedent Family, and, full of the Holy Spirit, sings a song of praise to God that appears in Luke. 1: 67-79. (Blessed: because this is the first word that appears in the Latin translation song)
The Song of the Angels
On the night that Jesus was born an angel was sent by God to give the news to a group of shepherds who guarded their flocks. After the Good News proclaimed, the Bible declares that "suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, saying: Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth among men, whom He wills well." 2: 8-14).
What the Bible Teaches Us
As we read earlier, Sacred Scripture teaches us that the music ministry is something old and was instituted in the house of God through King David. It also shows us how the music ministry should be organized and conducted in an indispensable way to support other ministerial services such as baptism, preaching, and evangelization.
Music in the Life of Jesus
During his childhood, Jesus knew music as any boy of his day. We can imagine that he often expressed the contentment He felt in His heart, singing psalms and celestial hymns, and that surely the inhabitants of Nazareth often heard His voice rise in praise and thanksgiving to God. In Israel, Jesus' introduction to music occurred at age 12, when His parents took Him to the temple in Jerusalem. It was spring, the most beautiful season, with flowers sprouting and birds singing. On the journey made on foot to Jerusalem, the psalms designated as "Songs of the Pilgrims" or "Songs of the Steps" (Ps 120-134) were sung. Imagine how it must have been for the boy Jesus to participate in these songs on the journey to the City of David!
The Music of the Early Christian Church
"And it was about midnight, and Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God; And the other prisoners listened. "Acts 16:25. Paul's admonition to early Christian churches was: "Be filled with the Spirit; Speaking among yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Singing and chanting to the Lord in your heart. "(Ephesians 5: 18-19)" Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly, in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing to the Lord with grace in your hearts . "(Colossians 3:16)
Spiritual songs
In addition to the psalms and hymns, Paul mentions spiritual songs as part of the Christian musical repertoire. Spiritual chanting is one that expresses the individual's relationship with God and emphasizes his or her own soul experience. Although the psalms were sung or intoned antiphonically, and the hymns were sung by the body of the congregation in unison, the spiritual song would have been a solo vocal expressing the elevation of the soul of the individual to GOD, an experience of his own heart and the response of love Of God the Father, the sacrifice of Christ, or the supplication of the Holy Spirit. The basic principle of the apostle Paul for Christian music, "Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" is still the ideal of the Christian church after all these centuries. The Song of such melodies has inspired millions of Christians and many listeners through the centuries, just as it did when Paul and Silas sang in the cell of Philippi
The Music in the Book of Revelation
John describes that in heaven there are the four "living beings" of six wings, which are around the throne of God singing without ceasing. This is a perpetual worship of quartet and choir. "Day and night they never cease to sing." (Rev. 4: 8-11). It is perceived that heaven is a place of musical worship where holy beings praise GOD continuously. What scales they use, or what manner of composition they follow, we do not know, we can only deduce that our faulty musical system produces music much inferior to theirs.
Examples we find in the bible
There are many examples, suggestion of reading in the books: I Sam 16,23 - Rs 3,1 4-18 - I Cor 15,16-22. In fact, all this is of fundamental importance, for it teaches us that the music ministry was something organized and defined for the Levites (the musicians) and for David. It is also explicit that it was not something improvised, formed only in the hour of need.
The music ministry must be planned, structured and prayed. If that was how it was then, how much greater our responsibilities today and the duty of dedication.
And if the world's instrumentalists work their hours to improve their techniques for their own sake (personal or professional goals), the more we ministers of music in the church should also be well instructed to praise our GOD and Lord!
The Ministry of Music is one of the most tempted by the adversary of our souls, in return it is also one of the most blessed by our GOD who Loves music deeply. Learn of something fascinating: music is also the language that God chooses to use in His rejoicing over us. Read: Zephaniah 3:17
